The number of senior drivers age 70 and older are driving more and keeping their licenses longer, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Elderly drivers have low crash rates, but the number of fatal crashes per mile traveled increases after age 70 and rises rapidly after age 80. Approaching senior drivers about driving restrictions can be a difficult situation.
